Getting Rid of Lice: Top 3 Simple & Natural Steps

It’s easy to freak out at the first sign (or letter sent home from school) of head lice. The thought of these tiny parasites making their home on our scalp can make us shudder, however, these parasites do not carry diseases, and itching is the only major issue they cause.

However, they can be quite tricky to get rid of.  Before we jump into the 3 steps, let’s chat about the ‘facts of lice’!

• Most common in ages 3-11.
• Higher prevalence in Caucasians.
• Head lice live in all kinds of hair, whether it’s clean, dirty, straight, curly or colored.
• Ladybugs will eat over 100 lice per day!

Now that you know a little bit more about these pesky parasites, here are the top 3 simple and natural steps to get rid of lice from the scalp/hair:

1. Tea Tree Oil – ready to apply to the correct amount, this can be applied directly to the hair and scalp.  Once covered, apply a shower cap and set a timer for 1 hour.  After an hour, use a fine-tooth comb to remove and pick out any lice and eggs.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar – ACV will help to ‘unstick’ the eggs attached to the hair shaft. After the Tea Tree treatment, rinse the hair with ACV and once again cover it with a cap for 1 hour.  Comb out any more lice and eggs.
3. Coconut Oil – Apply coconut oil to the scalp and hair to help drown out any remaining parasites. Once again, cover for an hour.  Comb out and finish with shampooing and conditioning as needed.

PREVENTION
