CBD, Hemp & Cannabis – What’s the Difference?

With all of the hype of CBD, THC and Hemp / Hempseed Oil, it is important to understand the difference between these parts of the hemp plant and how they are used.  Not sure on these acronyms?  Read more to learn!

Both THC and CBD influence our endocannabinoid system, yet both have a differing effect.

Let us start with THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) which is the compound found in the cannabis sativa plant (marijuana) with psychotropic (feeling high, paranoid, euphoria, pain relief) properties.

On the other hand, CBD has quite the opposite effect than THC.  Primarily used for inflammation, aches, and pains, reducing nausea and anxiety.  CBD is considered safe to use for nearly everyone, including pregnant moms, children, and pets.  Most CBD is less than 0.3% THC which is currently under the legal limit.

What is cannabis?

Cannabis refers to three parts of the cannabis plant; Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis.  There are over 120 cannabinoids in the cannabis plants, however, experts are familiar with two of them (THC and CBD).

There are three main parts of the plants that are used for cannabis products, the flower, the resin, and the oil.

What is Hemp?

Hemp is a strain from the cannabis sativa plant, which produces higher levels of CBD than THC.  Most people know hemp is associated with marijuana, but don’t completely understand the relationship between the two substances.

The confusion is derived from the fact that hemp and marijuana are both plants in the same Genus called Cannabis.  As stated above, there are 3 different types of plants in that Genus, each with different properties and producing differing amounts of cannabinoids.  Hemp typically means a Cannabis cultivar that produces little to no THC.

Hemp is grown for use in other products including paper, rope, clothing, even cereal and vitamin supplements.

Hempseed Oil

What is Hempseed Oil?

Hempseed Oil is another hemp product that is used in the cosmetic and food industry and will have little to no THC or CBD. (less than 0.3%).  By cold pressing the hemp seeds after a cleaning that removes nearly all the THC and CBD, we are left with a beautiful dark green oil that is high in omega fatty acids and contains anti-inflammatory properties.

What is Hash Oil?

Hash Oil is an oil obtained from the Cannabis plant that will contain THC.  It is obtained by cold pressing the flowers (not the seeds).  This resin is high in THC levels, generally higher levels than marijuana leaves and parts.


With the increased demand for medical marijuana most agricultural companies are now breeding their plants to have high concentrations of THC.  What this means for the consumer/user is stronger levels of marijuana than they may have used before.  Studies completed by the American Chemical Society have found that in the 1970’s a typical marijuana joint contained 10% THC, whereas today we are finding upwards of 30%.

In addition, the increased in popularity without strong regulation has increased the market potential of both the flower and ingestible oils.  Gas stations and smoke shops, for example, across the country are selling non-compliant flowers, THC and CBD products.

Finding the balance and educate educate educate!  There are so many health and wellness benefits to the use of CBD and low dose THC (less than 0.3% is legal in the United States) such as replacement of anxiety, opiates and other pain medications.  Continued regulation is needed for this growing industry so we can continue to offer a stellar quality product that works.

DIY At Home Face Masks

In honor of National Face Mask Day, I’m sharing with you my favorite ‘do at home’ face mask with items from your kitchen.

Why is masking important?

The right face care mask can hydrate the skin and remove excess skin oils, leaving your skin feeling fresh and renewed. Other than the results from the face mask, applying the mask will give you time to give yourself some self-care. The opportunity for some mental down time is crucial for you! Put the phone away, grab a book or spend the time journaling. Pour a hot cup of tea and take a warm salt bath or bubble bath.


2 Organic Avocadoes
¼ cup Organic Honey

Cut avocadoes in half and discard the pit. Remove the avocado and mash it up well. Add the
honey to the mix and muddle together. Mask will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.

To Use: Remove 1-2 TBSP of the mixture and gently spread on the face.
Leave on up to 5 minutes, then gently rinse off with warm water. Follow with Toner and

I like to add a TBSP of our Pink Hibiscus Face Mask to this mixture for the added benefit of natural clay and hibiscus. You can also add a few drops of jasmine, rose geranium, frankincense or tea tree essential oil to your mixture, based on your skincare needs.

What you should avoid:

Have you ever used those beloved face ‘sheet masks?’ You know, the kind that you apply to your face, leave on, and then peel off and throw away? Well, you may not want to use them again after you find out what they are doing to our environment! Sheet masks are single-use products, so once it’s used, it gets put in the trash. That can add up to a lot of waste. The pouch that they are typically packaged in is made of plastic and can take hundreds of years to decompose. The sheet itself may be in part cotton, however, it has been determined that all sheets contain small parts of plastic or nylon, which cannot be recycled or decomposed quickly. In addition, the chemical process to produce these sheets uses fossil fuels which contribute to air quality. What can you do? Avoid these sheets at all costs. Smudging and Cleansing Your Home and Workspace

Bad ju ju is a real deal. It isn’t something we can see, rather, we can feel it. Negative energy can linger anywhere – people, spaces, curtains, furniture, and clothes. Energy can stay trapped from past experiences, which is why it is very important to do a cleansing in your home and/or workspace on a regular basis.

The origins of smudging and cleansing date back hundreds of years. The most common reference is from the Inca and Native American culture. Traditionally used in ceremonies and rituals, sage and Palo Santo were often burned slow to rid negative energy and give balance. Used in the practice of Feng Shui, smudging is thought to rid the home of blocked negative energies, raise vibrations, and assist in spiritual work.

4 Step Guide On How To Clear Negative Energy


1. SMUDGE WITH WHITE SAGE: Give yourself at least 10 to 15 minutes of undisturbed time to smudge and cleanse.

Start by burning white sage while you walk around the space with it, swirling it in a counterclockwise rotation. You can say an affirmation like “I am clearing the negative and stagnant energy from this space to allow only the highest vibration to remain.” Make sure to have a fireproof container under the sage while you are smudging to prevent burning or glowing herbs from falling on the floor as you smudge. Abalone shells work well for this as they do not retain any energy, however, any type of container or dish will work.

When you have smudged all areas of your house or area, return to the starting point and gently put out the sage.

2. PALO SANTO CLEANSING: Cleansing with Palo Santo can be used in place of or in addition to smudging with white sage.

You can smudge once per month with sage, and cleanse intermittently throughout the week or daily with Palo Santo. Palo Santo, literally meaning “holy wood” in Spanish, is a tree that is widely distributed throughout Central and South America. Palo Santo is used in South America in much the same way as sage is used in North America- to combat negative energy and to cleanse the space. Palo Santo is different than many of the other smudging materials as it is citrusy and fragrant in its raw form and does not necessarily need to be lit, though it usually is when being used for ceremonial purposes. Palo Santo is helpful for a ‘people’ cleansing before doing energy work or meditating.

3. NATURAL SALTS: Salt crystals have an amazing natural built-in ability to absorb negative energy. Putting small bowls of salt in the corners of your home or room can help to remove negative energy. Empty the bowls periodically or daily and replace with fresh salt.

4. ROSE QUARTZ: Using crystals can be beneficial for a variety of reasons. You can place crystals throughout your home or office or carry them with you throughout the day. Rose Quartz carries many healing and balancing properties, including bringing love and balance to your life. It will naturally attract positive energy and carries positive energy. Often called a balancing stone, it will balance uneasy portions of your life in the negative and positive. Rose Quartz in your bedroom will help to promote sleep and relaxation. Celebrate Earth Day Everyday: Save the Earth with These Simple Tips

Earth Day is celebrate each year on April 22nd. But our Earth isn’t around for just a day, so why should we focus our Earth-saving efforts on just one day? Let’s celebrate Earth Day everyday and do our part starting with a few simple tips:

Water Saving Tips:

Do you ever wonder which wastes less – a shower or bath? It really depends on how long your shower is or how full you fill your bathtub. For example, a five minute shower uses a third less water than a full bath.

Is water leaking somewhere in your home? Even if it isn’t a huge leak, fix it right away. A small trickle adds up to gallons of water each week!

Use a low-flow showerhead and place mesh faucet ends on all your faucets, this will help decrease water usage dramatically.

Make sure your water heater is working efficiently and that you are having it routinely serviced.

Waste Reducing Tips:

While we are still on the topic of bathrooms, what is your shower curtain made of? Vinyl shower curtains are made entirely out of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and release dioxins. Dioxin is a known carcinogen that can disrupt hormonal systems and may cause damage to your reproductive and immune systems. Use a cotton or polyester shower curtain instead! Here are three types of plastics to be aware of:

  • #3 plastic
  • Vinyl
  • PVC

Did you know that in the United States over two billion disposable razors are purchased annually? They all need a place to go, so imagine the space those are taking up in a landfill! Instead, use a permanent razor that uses refillable blades. The handle might still be plastic, but you can use it repeatedly and thereby reduce both your waste and your guilt.

Even the clothes you wear have an impact on our Earth. Make a mental note the next time you go shopping to check the tag for what each garment is made of. Try buying more natural fibers like cotton, hemp, and wool. They do not generate must static electricity in the dryer, and generally require less to no dry cleaning. And because they are made from renewable resources, they can be composted!

Clean Drinking Water Tips:

There is a lot of debate on what is healthier – bottled water or tap water. Tap water does not leave behind a flood of non-biodegradable and rarely recycled plastic containers, and it most usually flows to us from an energy efficient infrastructure – no trucks or ships required. Our Earth does not need the strain of additional plastic bottles and not to mention tap water is regulated more consistently. Environmental Protection Agency rules apply to every public water system in the Country. In addition, you are entitled to the “Water Quality Reports” – also called “Consumer Confidence Reports”, which identify the source of the water and the contaminants found in it. Bottled water companies are under no regulation to report this to you. Improving Air Quality and Recycling Tips:

Recycling saves energy, and creating a new aluminum from scratch takes 95% more energy than making a can from a recycled aluminum.

Any plant in your home will help improve the air quality, but the most effective plants include: aloe vera, English ivy, fig tree, potted chrysanthemum, and spider plants.

Natural Cleaning Tips:

Nowadays, our store shelves are filled with a plethora of toxic cleaning agents. In the early 19th century, people cleaned with simple everyday ingredients, like vinegar. This is still a great idea!

Here are a few ways to clean naturally:

  • Use Daisy Blue Naturals handcrafted soaps for cleaning hands. Avoid anti-bacterial soaps at all costs. These soaps contain triethanolamine and have been proven to cause more harm than good because they kill beneficial bacteria as well as the bad stuff and may be leading to super-strains of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
  • Hot soapy water using DB Clean kills food-borne germs!  It can also be used to wash your hands, cutting boards, knives, and any surfaces that have come into contact with eggs or raw meat.  Wash for at least 20 seconds.
  • Baking soda is a mild abrasive.  It doesn’t scratch surfaces and it deodorizes.  Baking soda can be mixed with the soap/water blend above or mixed with white vinegar.
  • With more stainless steel appliances being sold today, the need for a natural cleaner is needed.  Use baking soda and scoop onto damp sponge.  Rub the soda on the metal until the surface is clean.  Rinse well with warm water and polish dry with a soft cloth.  For a quick clean, use vinegar and water, then polish with the cloth.
  • White Vinegar is an acid with mild-germicidal properties.  It can be used to get rid of mold and mildew, cut grease and clean glass.
  • Lemon works much like vinegar, but is more difficult to use.
  • Vitamin E Body Oil can add shine to wood furniture.  Use ½ a teaspoon in a quarter cup vinegar or lemon juice.
  • If you are dusting, use a damp cloth.  No need for the toxic sprays.Salt will clean copper pots and pans and is good for silver too.  Mix with equal amounts of vinegar.
  • Sponges and rags instead of paper towels.  Sponges can be washed in vinegar and used again.

Energy Efficiency Tips:

Unplug appliances you seldom use, like an extra refrigerator. You may save over $10 per month. Also don’t forget to unplug your chargers when you are not charging. Use power strips to turn off TV’s, stereos, and other equipment. Even when these items are on ‘standby’, consumption can be equal to a 100 watt lightbulb that is on continuously. Set your computer to hibernate after 30 minutes of non-use, and to sleep mode for longer periods of inactivity. The ‘hibernate’ mode turns the computer off in a way that doesn’t require you to load everything when you switch back on. Setting your computer to hibernate instead of shutting it down saves energy and is more time-efficient. When you are done for the day (or the weekend) shut it down. Control your temperature! Set your thermostat to 68°F during the day, and 55°F when going to bed. During the summer, set your thermostat to 78°F or higher.

Essential Oils for Your Pets

You love and enjoy your essential oils, but did you know your pets can to? Animals can benefit from essential oils just like us, but there are few things you need to know first. Make sure to dilute heavily with water or a carrier oil. Use in moderation and watch how your pet responds, each animal is different. Make sure to not place oils near sensitive areas like eyes, mouth, or nose.

Here are some ways our favorite 100% natural essential oils can be used to benefit your pet:

  • Tea Tree Oil: Naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral. Ear health, sores, cuts. (Avoid using on cats).
  • Lavender Oil: Ear health, healing, calming. Use to calm during separation anxiety. Rub on paws or apply to your hands and rub on pet. Apply directly to wounds.
  • Peppermint Oil: Add a couple drops to water dish to reduce ‘bad breath.’ Good for arthritis and strains.
  • Lemon Oil: Helps blood coagulate, so apply to any bleeding wounds.
  • Organic Castor Oil: Shines coat, reduces anxiety. Used on 4H animals before show.

Here are some other great essential oil recipes for your pets:

  • Bird Mist: 2 drops Peppermint, 3 drops lemon, & 4 drops lavender in a 4 oz. spray bottle containing distilled water. Helps birds maintain their health and gives the impression of being in a rainforest.
  • Pet Deodorant Spray: ½ dropper Lavender, ¼ dropper Lemon, ¼ dropper Peppermint, 5 drops Tea Tree. Mix in an 8 oz. bottle containing distilled water.
  • Animal & Human Allergies: Lemon, Lavender & Peppermint. Mix in even ratio (3 drops each). Apply topically to feet.
  • Insect Repelling Blend: ½ dropper Lavender, ½ dropper Peppermint, ¼ dropper Tea Tree, 3 drops Lemon. Mix in an 8 oz. bottle containing distilled water. Adding white or apple cider vinegar at a 1:1 ratio with water adds additional repelling power.
