How to Prep Your Skin for Makeup Application

Whether you are getting ready to go to work or getting glam for a night on the town, makeup is probably a part of your daily routine. Prepping your skin before makeup application is very important, often times great makeup is thanks to the preparation that goes onto the skin first. And while every skin type is different, here are the basics of what we’ve learned on how to prep your skin properly for makeup application.

(Not sure on your skin type? Download our free guide here!)

Start with Clean Skin

The first step should be cleansing your skin to remove any dirt, oil, and impurities.

This is not something we recommend for every day, but at least 2x per week. It will help remove the build-up of dead skin cells and other gunk.

Tone It Up

Next, take your toner – our favorite is Daisy Blue’s Witch Hazel and Aloe Toner – and apply it to a cotton ball or pad. This will help remove any remaining impurities left behind after the cleansing.

This step is imperative – moisturize! Make sure to choose a product that works with your skin type.

Prime Time

While this step isn’t for everyone, a lot of the fresh and flawless looks you see are thanks to a primer. This will help create a smooth base for your makeup application and extend the wear.

Using these simple steps should help you truly see a difference in your makeup application and longevity. Make sure to check out our 100% natural makeup and skincare products on our website!

What’s on YOUR Face?

Do you know what is in the makeup that you apply to your face everyday? Here at Daisy Blue we believe in transparency, and our makeup uses key ingredients such as natural mineral oxides and micas, and Vitamin C!

Our skin-nourishing formulas are derived from natural mineral pigments: mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and iron oxides. Mica provides subtle reflective properties to enhance the appearance of the skin; titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are pigments that give sun protection and anti-inflammatory benefits; and iron oxides add beautiful, natural color.

These essential nutrients replenish and protect the skin, soothing and smoothing your face while giving it a flawless, natural appearance.

  • In combination with our Sheer Aloe setting powder, the long-lasting, weightless coverage corrects problematic skin while the light-reflective minerals minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; evening out skin tones with perfect coverage while allowing your skin to breathe.
  • Pure, gentle, beneficial, nothing to irritate skin or clog pores.
  • The anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties are ideal for rosacea and
    problematic skin types.
  • Non-comedogenic and oil-free.
  • Natural SPF of 15 from the minerals used.
  • Much more forgiving than chemical makeup- one shade will suit a wide variety of
    skin tones.
  • Endorsed by cosmetic and plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and aestheticians.
Used by professionals for post-procedural coverage.
  • Great for hiding scars and tattoos

What you use to apply your makeup to your skin is JUST as important as what’s in the makeup. Our brushes are made of cruelty-free, professional-grade Taklon fibers.

  • Kabuki Brushes have dense compact bristles that hold onto the minerals allowing them to buff the minerals evenly onto the skin. Use this brush when applying Mineral Makeup Foundations.
  • Setting and Blush Brush have less compact fibers than the Kabuki Brush for lighter coverage. Use this brush with our Sheer Aloe Setting Powder and Blushes.

Washing Your Brushes: For best results, use Daisy Blue Naturals Gentle Face WashGreen Face & Body Bar, or Rose Face & Body Bar. Wet the bristles before applying the wash and rinse under warm water. If using the bar, get wet and press brush gently on the bar in a circular motion to clean. Keep the bristles pointing down during washing. Remove all buildup, rinse and then gently squeeze excess water out of your bristles with a paper towel. Reshape the bristles and lay flat to dry, fluff when completely dry. Keeping your brushes clean will provide you with years of flawless Mineral Makeup applications.

To the Bar – the Shampoo Bar!

Before the 1920’s, we never had a liquid shampoo. It was all bar soap. Now, we see shelves of chemically laden shampoos, which then need a conditioner to follow. Switching to shampoo bars can help increase volume and shine and reduce shedding, dandruff, and frizz. So why use shampoo bars?

They are:

  • Natural
  • Gentle
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Cost effective
  • Convenient

How To Use: Rub directly to hair or between hands to create a lather. Gently massage into the hair and scalp and rinse. Best results when used with soft water.

Read this testimonial from one of our local customers, George R., on how a shampoo bar changed his life:

“When I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, I tried all of the prescriptions and creams recommended by my doctor. This (Daisy Blue Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar) is the ONLY product that has worked to keep the dermatitis from flaring up. I use it religiously as my shampoo and body bar.”

What You Didn’t Know About Mascara

Prolonged chemically-laden makeup use causes cellular deficiency. In other words, the longer you wear a chemically-laden mascara, the worse the damage will be to your eye and surrounding tissue.

Do you know what else happens?

The follicles of the eyelashes are associated with a number of glands.  When the follicle and sebaceous glands clog, your body goes into overload to try and ‘fix’ the clog.  If your body cannot clear it, a stye can form.  This is certainly a BIG HINT that whatever has been on your eyelashes is not good!  Your mucous membranes are trying to keep the chemicals from most mascaras OUT of your body & bloodstream by keeping the follicles clear and healthy.

And this occurs too!

Damaged follicles will make your lashes grow stubby and in weird directions.  Many typical allergens and irritants are hidden in the ingredients in most mascaras, which can cause this damage.  Even mascaras labeled ‘natural’, ‘hypo-allergenic’, and ‘organic’ will more than likely have these ingredients.

Here are the MAIN OFFENDERS to avoid in mascara:

Acrylate Copolymer, and Polyvinylalcohol (PVA): MAN-MADE CHEMICAL PLASTIC. Typically created using acrylic acid (Dow chemical) and a pre-polymer.

Tromethamine:  This is an anti-inflammatory, used in the drug Toradol.

Ehtylhexylglycerin, Parabens, and Phenoxyethanol:  ARTIFICIAL PRESERVATIVE.  Irritant.  Synthetic preservative.

DimethiconePetrolatumPropylene glycol, and Polybutene:  petroleum by-products that clog the eyelash and skin pores.  Irritant.

We make it easy for you to find and use a mascara you can not only feel good about, but one that will actually make your eyelashes fuller, and healthier!  Our Natural Mascara contains NO HARSH CHEMICALS.  Check out our ingredient listing below:

Water (aqua), *Chamomile hydrosol, Carnauba Wax, Mica, * Coffee Powder, *Rice Powder, *Sunflower Oil, *Corn Starch, Lecithin, Vitamin E, Oregano, Thyme, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, Goldenseal, *Lemon Peel Extract, * Grapefruit Seed Extract, Vanilla Plantifolia (Orchid) Extract, Iron Oxide, and Titanium Dioxide.
